Ever since we are young, we are taught certain things in order to keep us safe. Like, dont play with matches, dont run with scissors, look both ways when crossing a street, cross within crosswalks, and walk on sidewalks/dont want in the middle of the street. The last one has brought me to writing this entry.
A while back, my school had the great idea to block the main roads that run thru the middle of campus off to vehicles. It has some bittersweet feelings. but that is for another day. Well with the roads being blocked off, one is free to walk wherever, right? In my mind yes. However, I find it amusing that I watch other students still walking on the sidewalk. Is it so in grained into our minds that one must walk on a sidewalk?
Or is there a sense of adventure lurking around? To walk in the middle of street? At times when coming back from dinner, an amazing sunset can be seen. It is almost too perfect to walk down an empty street look straight ahead of you and see amazing shades of pink, peach, orange, and the ever so slight hint of sky blue. Simply breathtaking. I have walked on the sidewalk a few times but, the branches of trees hinder my view.
Anyway back to conformities. Knowing one of the main reasons the school blocked off the roads was so we would be safer to walk to class, why would one not take advantage of it. They are giving us the space, lets us it.
So yeah. I just think its funny how no one walks in the middle of the street.
